The 99th Michigan Amateur will be contested at Oakhurst Golf and Country Club in Clarkston, June 22-26. With 156 of the state's best amateur players the competition is sure to be heated over these 5 days. Each player must qualify (unless otherwise exempt) at one of 12 sites held throughout the state. Michigan Amateur Championship competitors will play 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 23 to determine the 64 player match play field. The player who has the lowest 36-hole total will have earned medalist honors and have his name engraved on the Charles Kocsis Medalist Trophy. The players tend to have mixed feelings about earning medalist honors, as only seven medalists have gone on to win the championship. The Michigan Amateur is one of the most grueling tests in Michigan tournament golf. If a player can make a successful run at the Championship they may play somewhere in the neighborhood of 144 holes in 5 days to earn the deserving title of Michigan Amateur Champion and get their name on the Staghorn Trophy. Last year's champion, Tom Werkmeister of Grand Rapids defeated Matt Thompson 3&2 in the final to earn his title at Spring Meadows. Werkmeister went on to be named the GAM Player of the Year in 2009 and will be back to defend in 2010.
