2009 Women’s Amateur Comes to Great Oaks The 93rd Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship visits Great Oaks Country Club in Rochester, MI July 14-18. The contest features two days of stroke play, three days of match play and fierce competition between some of the best women amateur golfers in the state. The 36 holes of stroke play will determine the 32 players who will participate in the match play part of the tournament. Laura Bavaird, who won the tournament the past two years, won’t be part of the field this year as she has turned pro. So there will be no three-peat for Bavaird, but the door is open for a brand new champion. College golfers participating in the tournament include MSU Women’s Golf Team members Ashley Dewling and Maddi Massa, U of M golfer Louisa Shu and Ferris State’s Bryce Hetchler. Former champion Joan Garety (1982, 1997) will compete this year on what should be a very challenging Great Oaks course. GAM Director of Rules and Competitions, Ken Hartmann said Great Oaks will play at 6,091 yards for the tournament. Placement will be critical on the Mark McCumber-designed course which features several left doglegs and plenty of water. The tournament begins July 14 and spectators are welcome.
